I really dislike rushing projects, but have learned that sometimes a mad rush opens the doors to something unexpected. This week I have been rushing to get a PhD application together for University of Oregon. I simply could not ignore the strong suggestion of my wife to consider this possibility even though the deadline for fall 2020 is 23 December.

The more I look at their website–and with the contexts of Boise State and University of Montana fresh in my mind–I have come to see their geosciences program as very robust, and perhaps expanding. Presently I am looking closely at their geophysical research pertaining to early warning systems and post-event disaster recovery, involving remote sensing and seismology.

I do not have much travel experience with Oregon. In 1993 I visited the northern part (Portland and Mt Hood) as a side excursion while attending the USAF Survival School at Fairchild AFB in Spokane, WA. I drove down I-5 during a military move about 15 years ago. My memories are not very fresh for either occasion.

I need to make more contacts with potential research advisors to get additional information before I finalize and submit. Soon I will be in the waiting pattern for this opportunity alongside Boise State and the University of Montana.
